Chemical Reactions And Physical Changes/Separation And Solubility- Glossary Of Terms Flashcards
Distinguish
To tell if two things are different.
Flammable
Easily catches fire if near a flame (e.g. Oxygen)
Salt
An ionic compound that forms when an acid reacts with a metal.
Soluble
Solid will dissolve to some a solution (some liquids dissolve in liquids)
Insoluble
Solid which will not dissolve in solvent, forming either a sediment or a suspension.
Suspension
Solid particles don’t dissolve and are suspended in liquid causing cloudiness.
Sediment
Solid particles sit st the bottom of the liquid, not mixing with it
Solute
The solid that dissolves in a solvent
Solvent
The liquid that dissolves the solid
Transparent
Allows all light to pass through (i.e. clear)
Dissociation
Scientific term for dissolving
Polar
Made of a positive and negative charged end so they attract.
Ions
They have a positive (+) or negative (-) charge and obey the laws of attraction. They contain electrons and the atoms are neutral.
Saturated
The solvent cannot dissolve amuse more solute molecules; we see crystals forming at the bottom of the beaker.
Solubility
The amount of solute that dissolves in 100g of solvent at a particular temperature.
