Chemical Reactions - 6.1- 6.6 Flashcards
Define Activation Energy
the minimum quantity of energy which the reacting species must possess in order to undergo a specified reaction.
Destinguish the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions
Chemical reactions that absorb (or use) energy are called endothermic. Chemical reactions that release energy are called exothermic.
State the three key differences between Acid and Base
ACID:
strength of Acid depends on Concentration of Hydrogen ions.
Acids react with bases to form salts.
Acid turns blue litmus paper into red.
BASE:
Strength of Base depends on Concentration of Hydroxide ions
Bases react with acids to form salts.
Bases turn red litmus paper into blue.
What are the pH ranges of acid and base
pH of less than 7 indicates acidity and anything greater indicates a base.
What is the word equation for neutralization reactions
Acid + Base = Salt + Water
Write the word equations for acids reacting with metals
Metal + Acid → Salt + Hydrogen
Write the word equations for metal reacting with oxygen
metal + oxygen → metal oxide
Write the word equations for Combustion reactions
Fuel + O2 → CO2 + H2O
Name examples of alcohol
Ethanol, Methanol, Propanol
what are advantages and disadvantages of biofuels
Advantages:
they are renewable sources, they slow climate change, are easily produced, cause less pollution, are accessible, and are energy-efficient.
Disadvantages:
The disadvantages are that they encourage single crop harvesting, resource & food mismanagement, and are climate dependent.
