Chemical Reactions Flashcards

1
Q

These occur when 2 of more atoms combine to form a single product.
These reaction are also sometimes called combination reactions.
Examples:
2CO+ O₂ =2CO₂

BASIC FORMULA:
A + B = AB

2
Q

These reactions occur when a single compound is broken down into two or more simpler products. They are the opposite of synthesis reactions.
Examples:
CaCO₃= CaO = CO₂

BASIC FORMULA:
AB = A + B

Q

These reaction occur when one element is substituted for another element,emt within a compound. These reactions are called substitution reactions for the reason. One of these reaction typically involve aqueous solution, or solution in which water is the solvent. During these reactions, we find that metals will replace other metals and nonmetals will replace other nonmetal.
Examples:
2AgNO₃(aq) + Cu(s) = Cu(NO₃) (aq) + 2Ag(s)

BASIC FORMULA:
A + BC = B + AC

Q

These reactions occur when two compounds exchange species with on another. These reaction are also called precipitation reaction because they typically create a solid precipitate. Yet another name for these reactions is metathesis reactions.
Examples:
HCI + NaOH = H₂O + NaCl

BASIC FORMULA:
AB + CD = AD + CB

A

Double replacement reaction of double displacement reactions
