Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is the process for chemical reactions?
Energy is absorbed to break the bonds in the reactants.
Once the atoms are rearranged, energy is released during the formation of new bonds in the products.
What is an exothermic reaction?
When energy is released during a reaction.
What is an endothermic reaction?
When energy is absorbed during a reaction.
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur.
What is collision theory?
For a chemical reaction to occur, particles must collide with each other, the activation energy must be reached, and the orientation of the particles must be correct.
What factors affect rate of reaction?
Surface area, concentration of solutions, concentration of container, temperature, presence of a catalyst.
What are enzymes?
A biological catalyst made up of proteins.
What is single displacement?
When a more reactive element replaces another in the compound.
What is double displacement?
Double displacement reactions occur when a part of two ionic compounds is exchanged.
What is synthesis?
When two elements combine in a chemical reaction.
What is decomposition?
When one single compound breaks down into two or more simpler chemicals.
What is the formula for combustion?
Fuel + Oxygen > Carbon Dioxide + Water.
What is a mole?
A unit used to measure the amount of substance.
What is Avogadro’s number?
6.02 x 10^23.
What is the equation for the number of moles?
n = Number of particles/Avogadro’s number.
