Chemical Reaction Types Flashcards
Synthesis
Small molecules or atoms are joined together to make a larger molecule.

5 Patterns of Chemical Change
Allow us to predict what will be made in advance.
Decomposition
A large molecule is taken apart to form a smaller molecule or atoms.
AB —> A + B
Single Replacement (Displacement)
Switch the “like” ions. (Lover’s Triangle)
AB + C —> CB + A

-+ - -+ -
Double Replacement (Displacement)
Switch + ions only. (Swingers)
AB + CD —> CB + AD

Combustion
When a hydrocarbon fuel reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Ex. Methane + Oxygen —> Carbon Dioxide + Water
CH4 + 2O2 —> CO2 + 2H2O
(Oxygen, Nitrogen, & Sulfur are OK in a hydrocarbon)
