Chemical Naming and Formulae Flashcards
What is a “compound”?
A compound is a type of pure substance that is formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together.
Compounds of a metal and a non-metal:
- Write down the name of the metal.
- Write down the name of the non-metal and then
change the ending to -ide.
Name any 2 compounds.
Sodium iodide.
Calcium oxide.
Any other correctly named compound is acceptable.
Compounds of a metal, non-metal and oxygen:
- Write down the name of the metal.
- Write down the name of the non-metal and then
change the ending to -ate.
Name any 2 compounds.
Magnesium carbonate.
Calcium sulphate.
Any other correctly named compound is acceptable.
Compounds containing non-metals only:
- Name the element that is furthest left of the periodic table ( if it contains more than 1 atom, add a prefix).
- For the second non-metal, specify the amount of atoms present by adding a prefix and change the ending to -ide.
Name any 2 compounds.
Sulphur trioxide.
Dinitrogen tetroxide.
Any other correctly named compound is acceptable.
Every compound has a ________ ________ that tells
you how many atoms of each element is present in a
compound.
- Chemical formula.
You can derive the formulae of compounds that
contain metals and non-metals by using the ______ and ______ method.
The _______ of an element is the number of electrons that an element will lose, gain or share in a chemical reaction.
- Swap and Drop.
