Chemical Forces lesson6 sep.9 2024 Flashcards
Intramolecular bonds
Bonds between atoms that form a molecule.
Ionic bonds
Bonds between metal cation and nonmetal anion based on electrostatic (charge) attraction.
All ionic bonds create
salts, that must be neutral
The……. receives the element name,
while the ……………receives the suffix “ide”
(In ionic bonds when a salt is created)
The metal cation receives the element name,
while the nonmetal receives the suffix “ide”
Covalent bond types:
Nonpolar covalent bond,
Polar covalent bond
Dative bond
Nonpolar covalent bond - created when…
two non-metals have the same electronegativity
Polar covalent bond - created when….
one element is more electronegative than the other, so the electrons are attracted to its direction, and polarity can be created
Dative bond- A type of covalent bond where………
one atom donates both electrons in favor of the bond. Usually involves H+ .
Metallic bond
A bond between metals (especially the D-Block in the
periodic table).
The atoms release all their valence shell electrons to the favor of the group, creating a strong connection
Intermolecular bonds
Attractions and associations between molecules.
Hydrogen bonds are created when……
a hydrogen that is covalently bonded to one of the NOF elements, is attracted to another NOF element on a different molecule.
Van der Waals force types
Dipole/Dipole
London forces
Dipole/Dipole- Attraction between….
polar molecules as the partial positive side of one molecule is attracted to the partial negative side of another molecule.
London forces
weak interaction between nonpolar molecules. based on momentary transient polarity.
Hydrophobic interactions
Hydrophobic interactions are when nonpolar molecules are repulsed by a polar environment, and look for each other to aggregate.
