Chemical Connections Lipids 2-F Flashcards
This inflammation response is mediated by
prostaglandin molecules
Prostaglandin molecules are derivatives of
arachidonic acid, a 20:4 fatty acid
Anti-inflammatory steroid drugs such as
cortisone
is the oldest and best known NSAID.
Aspirin
which were initially prescription medications, are now commonly used over-the-counter anti-inflamma-tory drugs
Ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve)
The most often prescribed prescription NSAID is
diclofenac
also produces prostaglandins that induce the production of a protective mucous coating for the stomach lining (a desirable situation)
COX-1
is responsible for the production of additional prostaglandin molecules involved in inflammatory diseases such as arthritis (an undesirable situation).
The COX-2 enzyme
inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes.
Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac
The best known of these COX-2 inhibitors are
Vioxx and Celebrex,
was withdrawn from the market because of concerns relating to heart attacks and strokes
