Chemical Compounds Flashcards
when are chemical compounds formed?
when the atoms of elements join together
give examples of common compounds
-Water H2O (two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom creates the compound of water)
-Table Salt. NaCl (one sodium atom and one chlorine atom)
what atoms are in CO 2
1 carbon and two oxygen
what atoms are in CH 4
1 carbon and 4 hydrogen
What is meant by the term molecule?
A molecule is a group of atoms joined together.
What do you think is meant by the word/prefix “di” in
chemistry?
Di means two.
what is the difference between a compound and a mixture
Compound: Pure substance consisting of two or more different atoms.
Mixture: Two or more different substances not chemically combined
Compounds are formed when atoms JOIN together. It is one thing to mix 2 elements together, but if their atoms do not join chemically then no compound will form.
what technique can you use to separate elements
Electrolysis
