Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Intramolecular Bond
Is A bond which occurs between atoms within molecules
Valence electrons
The electrons found in the outermost energy level of an atom
Valency
The number of electrons gain lost or shared to complete the outermost energy level
Covalent bond
Is a sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms
Non polar covalent (pure covalent)
Is an equal sharing of electrons
Electronegativity
Is a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract the bonding pair of electrons
Ionic bond
Is the transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction
Metallic bond
Is the bond between a positive kernel and a sea of the delocalised electrons
Bond energy
The amount of energy needed to break a specific bond
Kinetic energy
The energy an object has as a result of the objects motin
Kinetic-molecular theory
All matter consists of small particles which move continuously. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of which matter consists
Intermolecular force
A weak force of attraction between molecules, ions and atoms of noble gases
Molar mass
Mass in grams of one mole of that substance
Polar covalent
Unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming. This is the result of a difference in electronegativity between the atoms
