Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Compound
A substance that is made up of two or more different elements chemically combined
Octet Rule
When bonding occurs, atoms tend to reach an electron arrangement with eight electrons in the outermost shell
Ion
A charged atom or group of atoms
Ionic Bond
The force of attraction between oppositely charged ions in a conpound
Transition Metal
Forms at least one ion with a partially filled d sublevel
Molecule
A group of atoms joined together
Valency
The number of atoms of hydrogen or any other monovalent element with which each atom of the element combines
Electronegativity
A measure of the relative attraction that an atom in a molecule has for the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond
Water of crytallisation
Water chemically combined in definite proportions in a crystalline compound
Covalent Bond
Two atoms share a pair of electrons
Sigma Bond
Covalent bond between two atoms formed by head on overlap of orbitals
Pi Bond
Covalent bond between two atoms formed by sideways overlap of orbitals
Polar Covalent Bond
Unequal sharing of electrons
Electron Repulsion Theory
The electron pairs in the outer shell of the central atom repel each other and end up as far apart as geometrically possible
