FLAME TEST K+
Lilac
white precipitate that is insoluble in sodium hydroxide
Al3+ , Mg 2+, Ca2+
White precipitate that is soluble in excess sodium hydroxide
Al 3+
Red precipitate when sodium hydroxide is added
Fe3+
Light blue precipitate when sodium hydroxide is added
Cu2+
Light green/brown precipitate when sodium hydroxide is added
Fe2+
Test for carbonates
Add Hcl , if fizzing happens– shows co2 is present therefore it is a carbonate-
How to test for halides
Add dilute nitric acid and then silver nitrate
If a precipitate forms halide ions are present
Colour of precipitate when iodine ions are present
Yellow precipitate
Colour of precipitate when Br ions are present
Cream precipitate
Precipitate colour when chloride ions are formed
White precipitate
