Chemestry Flashcards
Physical Property
Description of a substance that does NOT involve the formation of a new substance.
Examples of Physical Properties (8)
Colour Texture Density Odor Solubility Taste Melting Point Physical State
Chemical Property
Description of what a substance does as it changes into one or more new substances.
Possible Evidence of chemical changes: (5)
New colour appears Heat or light is produced or absorbed Bubbles of gas are formed Precipitation- a solid forms into a liquid The change is difficult to reverse
What is a period?
Row of elements on the periodic table(horizontal)
What is a group?
Column of elements on the periodic table(vertical)
Where are halogens located?
17th group
What is an ion?
A charged particle that results when an atom gains or loses one or more electrons.
How do you find the electrical charge of an ion?
positive charge(protons) over negative charge(electrons) Ex. \+11 -10 =+1
What is a cation?
positive charged ion.
What is an anion?
negative charged ion.
What is an ionic compound?
a compound made up of one or more positive metal ions and one or more negative nonmetal ions.
What is a molecular compound?
a pure substance formed with 2 or more nonmetals
What is a covalent bond?
a bond that involves the SHARING of outer electrons between nonmetal atoms
What type of reaction occurs when a new substance is formed?
chemical
