Chemestry Flashcards
What does combustion (burning) make? And what is the word equation?
Carbon dioxide + water
E.g. Methane + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
What is thermal decomposition? And what is the word equation?
Is the breaking down of a compound using heat
Copper carbonate = copper oxide + carbon dioxide
What does thermal decomposition of metal carbonates always produce?
Carbon dioxide gas
What is the test for carbon dioxide gas?
Is that it turn limewater cloudy
Why do chemical reactions combine reactants?
To make new products
On the periodic table what does the staircase divide?
Metals from non-metals
Why groups go down down the line?
Because the elements have similar properties
Where are groups?
Vertical
Where are periods on the periodic table?
Horizontal
What do elements in the same group have?
Similar properties e.g appearance, melting point, and reactions with other elements
What is an alkali?
A base that is soluble in water e.g calcium oxide is a vase and sodium hydroxide is an alkali
What’s the process of neutralisation
Acid + alkali = salt + water
What is a use for neutralisation?
In digestion pills are alkaline so they neutralise excess acid in the stomach
