What does acid rain harm?
lakes-fish
Trees-leaves and roots can be damaged causing them to grow poorly
Buildings-dissolves some types of stone(limestone and marble)therefore damaging stone structures
What is acid rain?
Rain that is unusually acidic
How does acid rain form?
Acid rain results when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the atmosphere they react to form sulfric and nitric acids
What are the properties required in a heartburn medication?
Antiacids are used as they are alkaline which helps to neutralizes the stomach acid
What can be used to treat a bee sting?
An alkaline for example tooth paste
What can be used to treat a wasp sting?
An acid for example vinegar or lemon juice
Everyday example of where an acid neutralizes an alkaline?
Treating a wasp sting with vinegar
Everyday example of where and alkaline neutralizes an acid?
Brushing teeth with toothpaste
What is a substance with a pH of 7 and an example?
Neutral and pure water
Everyday example of an acidic substance?
Any of these- Battery acid,
Lemon juice, bee sting
Everyday example of an alkaline substance?
Any of these- Toothpaste, wasp sting, oven cleaner
What is the pH range of acids?
1-6
What is the pH range of alkalines?
8-14
What is pH?
A numeric scale used to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a substance
What is neutralization?
When an acid and an alkaline cancel out each other so it becomes neutral
What is the word equation for neutralization?
acid + alkaline -> salt+ water
What can be used to identify the pH of a substance? (3)
Universal indicator, pH paper, litmus paper
