Biology Flashcards
What is the function of the stomach?
Food is mixed with strong acid and enzymes to break down food
What is the function of the gall bladder?
Stores bile until it is released into the small intestine where it helps break down fats
What is the structure and function of capillaries?
Form networks at tissues and organs. Very small only one cell thick. Allows substances to be exchanged between blood vessels and tissues
What does every living cell need?
Oxygen and glucose
What is the function of the Uterus?
Where the baby grows
What is the function of the oviducts?
Carry the egg to the uterus
What is the function of the penis?
carry sperm out of the body
What is the function of the sperm tube?
Carries sperm to the penis
What is the function of the testes?
Produce sperm cells
When is it called a zygote?
When the egg has been fertilized
When the egg is beginning to divide what is it called?
A embryo
When is it called a fetus?
When all the vital organs have formed around 10 weeks
What is the function of the uterus?
Where the fetus develops
What is the function of the ammonitic fluid?
The fluid the fetus develops in, protects it as it acts as a cushion.
What can harm a fetus/embryo?
Smoking, drugs, too much caffeine and alcohol
What is the function of the first line of defense?
To stop microbes entering
How many lines of defense does the immune system have
3
Examples of the first line of defense and their function?
Tears- produce chemicals called enzymes which can kill some microbes on the surface of the eye
Skin- Stop microbes entering the body unless hurt or damaged
What are phagocytes and what is their function?
White blood cells that are non-specific. When their is anything forgin. They move towards it and engulf it destroying it
How do you birng about immunity ?
People develop immunity naturally after being affected by a disease or artificially using a vaccine.
How do vaccines work?
The body makes antibodies against them but you are not affected by the disease. If you become infected by the real microbe which causes the disease your body rids it from your system become you feel the effects and become ill.
What organ is beneath the mouth?
Salivary glands
What organ is beneath the stomach?
Pancreas
What organ is above the anus?
Rectum
