CHEM TEST 1 Flashcards
What are the 2 other names for group 18
Noble gases and inhert gases
What is the trend as you go down a group?
The atomic radius gets bigger
Why do metals hold their electrons weakly?
Beacuse they have less protons in the nucleus compared to non metals, which means that the metals nuclei have a weak attraction to electrons.
why do metals become more reactive as you down a group?
because they are reacting to their electrons being pulled away
what happens to the atomic radius as you go across a period?
it gets smaller
as you go down group 17( halogens) they get less reactive, why?
because the electrons in the valence shell get further away from the nucleus compared to elements at the top of group 17
who wins the tug of war between metals and non metals, what happens to the winner?
Non metals win to gain the electron and become a negitive anion.
Why are inhert gases not reactive?
beacuse they already have a full shell
list the way to name the number of atoms
Mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nona, deca
what is electricity?
Moving charged electron particles
what are the masses of a proton, neutron and electron
1,1, 1/2000
what is the mass number? what does it tell us? where is it written?
the mass number is how many protons plus neutrons the element has. it tells us the average weight of all the elements isotopes. it is found in the top right
what is the atomic number? what does it tell you? where is it found?
the atomic number is the amount of protons. it tells us the element. it is written in the bottom right
What is an isotope?
an element with the same number of protons and electrons but a diffrent number of neutrons.
what happens to the valence electrons as you go across a period
it increases by one each time.
