Q
  1. What is the physical and chemical property of rain/water?
A

Water is a colorless and tasteless liquid. It also has a low density as a solid. The chemical formula is H20. Water is a universal solvent. It also can act as an acid or base. Water in its natural form is not acidic or basic (7)

Q
  1. Complete the following table. Determine the formula of sulphur dioxide and where this pollution comes from. Same for nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.
A

SO2 – Most of Canadas of sulfur dioxide production comes from burning coal to form electricity and mining metals

NO and NO2 -mostly comes from the emissions produced by vehicles that burn fossil fuels mainly gasoline

Q
  1. What is the chemical equation for sulfur trioxide combined with rain? (Word and balanced equation)
A

SO3 + H2O→ H2SO4 - sulfur trioxide + water → sulfuric acid
3NO2 + H2O  2HNO3 + NO – nitrogen dioxide + water→ nitric acid + nitrogen monoxide

Q
  1. Describe four impacts of acid perception (environmentally, socially, economically) bring up what Karen said!
A

When acid rain enters the food chain its travels. For example, acid rain travels to worms and the bird eats the worm. Birds are then laying eggs that seem normal, but the shell is to thin or to thick. Acid rain can also slowly eat away at buildings. One of Canadas biggest economies is wood since we have many forests. Acid can affect the quality and we lose billions of dollars of wood. Fish stocks are another industry that has been affected.

Q
  1. List two ways emission have reduced over the 1980s (scrubbers, laws, use different energies)
A

In 1990 the clean air act was revised. The president wanted to reduce toxic emissions, air pollution and acid rain. It required cutting sulfur and nitrogen emissions in half. This law was signed by Canada and the United States. Scrubbers were also something being used to reduce sulfur emission through a goop but when they were scrapped off they would be thrown into bodies of water counting the cycle making it overall have a negative effect.
