Chem Quiz 4 Flashcards
What is a solution?
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances.
What is a solvent?
The component of a solution that is present in the greatest amount.
What is a solute?
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent.
What is an aqueous solution?
A solution that contains water.
What is solubility?
The maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a given quantity of solvent at a specific temperature.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution that cannot dissolve more solute. Crystals are visible, crystal does not dissolve or grow (seed crystal test).
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution that could dissolve more solute. No visible crystals and crystal will dissolve (seed crystal test).
What is a supersaturated solution?
A solution that contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution at the same temperature. No crystals are visible, crystal will grow and become hot (seed crystal test).
Is a can of pop: saturated, unsaturated, or supersaturated?
Supersaturated because it can hold more solute (CO2) when it is under pressure. When you open the can, it becomes saturated and the excess gas escapes.
What are the 3 factors that affect solubility?
Ionic or covalent? Temperature. Pressure.
What are the 3 factors that affect the rate of dissolving?
Agitation, temperature(heating up), Surface area (sugar cubes).
What is the concentration triangle?
When ionic compounds dissolve in water…
…they form non-dipole forces with the water molecules.
Polar solutes dissolve in_______.
Polar solvents.
Non-polar solutes dissolve in___________.
Non-polar solvents.
