Chem Q9 a-c Flashcards
What is the oxidation #?
a psoitive or negitive # assigned to an element showing its combining ability in an ionic chemical fromula
Will an element always have have just one oxidantion #?
no
What are Murcury’s oxidation #’s?
+1 or +2
What are cooper’s oxidation #’s?
+1 +2
Oxidation #’s of Pb?
+2 or +4
Oxidation #’s for Sn?
+2 or +4
Oxidation #’s for Fe?
+2 or +3
What is a Bianary compound?
compound composed of only 2 elements (not 2 atoms!)
What are the three rules for writing the chemical fromula for Ionic Bianary Compounds?
- Write the symbol for positive oxidation # first, usually a metal
- Write symbol for negative oxidation # second, ussaly nonmetal
- Make sure the sum of the electric chagres =0
What are the three rules for writing the names for Ionic Bianary Compounds?
- Write the name of the first element (use roman numerals IF element has more than 1 oix. #
- Write the root of the second element
- Add the ending “ide”
How do you write the names for Covalent BInary Compounds (c/o)? (what are the three steps?)
- Always add a prefix to the 2nd element
- If there is more than 1 atom for the first element, then the first element also needs a prifix
- Use “-ide” for the ending
What is the prefix for 1?
mono
What is the prefix for 2?
di
What is the prefix for 3?
tri
What is the prefix for 4?

What is a polyatomic ion?
a group of elements that have a + or - charge
Which kind of bond will a polyatomic ion be?
ionic
What do you do if you have more than one polyatomic ion?
add ()’s
