AAM Q14&15 Flashcards
What is a chemical property?
a characteristic of a substance that can’t be observed w/out altering the substance’s chemical composition
What happens to a substance when it undergos a chemical change?
it changes its identity (new chemical formula)
What is a chemical change?
the change of one substance into a differant substance(s) ex: burning paper
What are some chemical changes?
- reacts to O2
- flammability
- photosnesitivity (reacts w/ light)
- reacts w/ acid
What provides evidence that there is a chemical change? (8)
- explodes
- change in color*
- new odor (gas)
- new soild made
- new taste
- flammable
- releases energy (sound, fire, light, heat)
- absorbes energy (cooking)
Can chemical changes be reversed?
no
How long do chemical changes take?
they can be imidiate or happen over a long amount of time
Are taste and smell a chemical property?
these are both chemical (smell and state are both chemical reactions) and physical
How can you tell is it’s a new substance?
looks differanst, behaves differantly, new chemical formula
