Who was Dmitri Mendeleev?
A
Russain, a genuis, how created the periodic table in 1865
2
Q
What two ways did Mendeleev order the periodic table?
A
- Ordered elements by increassing mass (average atomic mass)
- Grouped eleemnts into colums by similar properties
3
Q
What are the five ways the periodic table is orginized today?
A
- by increasing order of atomic #
- for the most part, by increasing order of average atomic mass (not 100% true)
- by vertical colums called “gropus” (elements with similar properties)
- metals on the left, nometals on the right
- where electrons are located on the atom
4
Q
What are the three types of elements?
A
- Metals
- Nonmetals
- Metalloids
5
Q
What are metals? (6)
A
- solids (2 exeptions)
- have high melting point
- shiny
- good conductors of heat and electricty
- malleable (flatten out into sheets)
- ductile (pull into wire)
6
Q
Nonmeals
A
- gases or brittle soilds (1 liquid)
- low melting points
- dull
- poor conductors of heat and electricty
7
Q
Metalloids
A
elements that share properties of both metals and nonmetals ex: boron
located on the stair steps
8
Q
What are the lanthanide series?
A
- elements with atomic #’s 58-71 (near the bottom of the peroidc table)
- soft metals that are somewhat rare on earth
- all natural, but 1 man-made
9
Q
What is group 1?
A
Alkali metals
10
Q
What are the actinide series?
A
- elemenst with atomic #’s 90-103 (at bottom of periodic table)
- radioactive metals
- most mand-made, 3 are natural
11
Q
What are the noble gasses?
A
- “Snobby elements”
- They don’t react or combine with other elements
- gasses
- easily change into plasma when electrified
