CHEM pt 2 - Chemical Bonding and Compounds Flashcards
Ionic Compounds Naming and Formulas of Ionic Compounds Polyatomic Ions Covalent Bonding (naming and formulas)
Why are compounds ionic?
Compounds are ionic because one element gives electrons, and the other takes electrons.
What types of elements form ionic compounds?
Ionic compounds are made up of a metal and a non-metal.
What is the general rule for naming ionic compounds?
The name is written as “metal non-metal-ide.”
Example: NaCl is named sodium chloride.
How do you modify the name of the non-metal in an ionic compound?
Replace the ending of the non-metal’s name with “-ide.”
What do you write first and second when making an ionic formula?
The metal with its charge and the non-metal with its charge.
How do you find the subscripts for an ionic formula?
criss cross the charges, simply swap the charges between the metal and non metal
example- What is the formula for magnesium chloride?
Mg²⁺ and Cl⁻ → Criss-cross → MgCl₂.
what is a polyatomic ion?
An ion made up of more than one atom that acts as a single particle.
