BIO pt 2- Cell Biology and Specialization Flashcards
Plant and Animal Cell Structures Specialized Cells Stem Cells and Cellular Differentiation Cancer
what is a Tumour?
a mass of cells that continue to grow and divide without any obvious function in the body
what is a Benign tumour?
a tumour that does not affect surrounding tissues other than by physically crowding them
what is a Malignant tumour?
a tumour that interferes with the functioning of surrounding cells; a cancerous tumour
What is Metastasis?
the process of cancer cells breaking away from the original (primary) tumour and establishing another (secondary) tumour elsewhere in the body
What is mutation?
a random change in the DNA
What is Carcinogen?
A carcinogen is a substance, organism or agent capable of causing cancer. Carcinogens may occur naturally in the environment - they may cause cells to divide at a faster than normal rate, which could increase the chances that DNA changes will occur.
What is a specialized cell
A cell that can perform a specific function. for example - white blood cells
what is cellular differentiation?
Refers to the stage of development during which specialized cells are formed.
