Q

what are the four stages in the LCA?

A
  1. extracting and processing raw materials
  2. manufacturing and packaging
  3. use and operation during its lifetime
  4. disposal at the end of its useful life, including transportation and distribution

Q

why is recycling important?

A

recycling materials uses less energy. This means that we can also reduce the amount of waste and pollution.

Q

how can waste water and sewage be treated?

A
  • Firstly, filtered to remove large particles and is left so that sediment drops to the bottom. The “sludge” at the bottom is then anaerobically digested (broken down by bacteria) to make methane gas. Any remaining effluent is broken down by aerobic respiration. The water is then released back into rivers and lakes.

11
Q

how do you do the potable water practical

A
  1. use universal indicator to test pH of the water
  2. measure and record the mass of an empty evaporating basin
  3. pour 10 cm3 water into the evaporating basin and evaporate the water using a bunsen burner until most of the water has evaporated.
  4. once evaporating basin is cool reweigh and record the change in mass
  5. calculate the mass of dissolved solids
