Chem Key words Flashcards
LO1
Atom
Basic structure of all matter and consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons
Nucleus
Contains protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons
Electron
Negatively charged particle with a mass of about 1-1836th that of a proton
Nucleon
General term describing both protons and neutrons
Proton
A nucleon with a single positive charge and a relative mass of a approx. 1, or more accurately 1.0073 so mass is slightly less than a protons
Neutron
Nucleon with no net electric charge and a relative mass of a approx. 1, but more accurately 1.0087 so mass slightly more than a proton
Isotope
Atom of the same element but different numbers of neutrons
Atomic Number
Aka proton number, number of protons in the nucleus if an atom. Also number of electrons in the neutral atom
Relative Atomic Mass
The mass of an atom relative to 1/12th of an atom of carbon-12.
Group
Refers to column in the periodic table. Elements in the same group have similar properties
Period
Refers to rows in the periodic table. Each period has one more shell of electrons than the previous period
Ionisation Energy
Energy needed to remove an electron from an atom in the gas phase. Measured by how tight the electron is held by the nucleus - the strength of the attraction between the positive nucleus and the negative electron
Compound
A substance that contains more than one type of atom. Those atoms can be held together in two main ways - by ionic or covalent bonds
Alloys: Characteristic
Comprises of a significant percentage of a base metal
