What are the 2 unique steps for naming covalent compounds?
A
- Use prefixes to indicate the number of atoms (mono-, di-, tri-, etc.).
- Name the second element with a prefix and add the “-ide” (oxide).

What are the 3 steps for naming ionic compounds?
A
- Identify the cation (metal)
- Identify the anion second (nonmetal) + name it with the “-ide” suffix
- Ensure charges are balanced
