Chem 3 Vocabulary Flashcards
Matter
Anything that takes up space
Substance
Matter that has a uniform and unchanging composition
Ex table salt, hydrogen, oxygen, sucrose, glucose, Mercury
Physical property
A substance that can be observed or measured Without changing the composition of the substance
Ex luster, hardness, density, melting point, malleability, ductility,
Luster
How shiny or bright something is
Malleability
Ability to be pounded into a thin sheet
Ductility
Ability to be drawn in a thin wire
Conductitivity
Ability to conduct heat or electricity
Extensive property
A physical property that is dependent on the amount of substance present
Ex mass, length, width, weight, height, VOLUME
Intensive property
A physical property that IS NOT dependent, (independent) on the amount of substance present
Ex color, density, boiling point, melting point, solubility, expansion, porosity
Density
Mass per unit volume
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance
Porosity
The state of having many pores or holes
Pyrite
Fools gold that people tried to sell instead of gold
Thermal
Energy or heat
Chemical property
Describes the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more substances
Stability
How stable a substance is
Radioactivity
How radioactive something is
Reactivity
How reactive something is
Flammability
How combustible something is
