2
Q

Change when forming alloys

A

Addition of different-sized atoms to pure metal distorts original regular sturcture
-> slipping of layers of atoms more difficult -> stronger, harder, less malleable, less ductile (physical property change)
Irregular structure -> lower melting point than component metals

Q

Stainless steel

A

Corrosion resistant, 70 iron 20 chromium 9.5 nickel 0.5 carbon
Chromium (lll) oxide (rusting only for iron)
Cooking utensils, tableware, surgical tools (non-toxic!)
Alloying expensive but iron abundant so kinda balance out
