Chem 121 Exam 2 Flashcards
What are strong electrolytes?
Substances that are very good at conducting electricity because they are broken apart into ions
- strong acids
- strong bases
- soluble ionic compounds
What are weak electrolytes?
Substances that aren’t great conductors because they do not separate into ions completely
- weak bases
- weak acids
What is dissociation?
Where ionic compounds break down into ions
What is ionization?
where molecular compounds break down into ions
What are the 7 strong acids?
HCl, HBr, HI, HNO3, H2SO4, HClO4, HClO3
What are the 8 strong bases?
LiOH, NaOH, KOH, RbOH, CsOH, CaOH2, SrOH2, and BaOH2
What compounds are soluble?
- Compounds with group 1A metals
- Ammonium
- Cl, Br, I
- C2H3O2, HCO3, NO3, ClO3 and SO4
- Unless they are halides or sulfate with, Ag, Ba, Ca, Hg, Pb or Sr
What compounds are insoluble?
- Compounds with CO3, CrO4, PO4, S, and OH
- Unless they are with group 1A metals or the ammonium ion.
BaOH is the only other
What are the oxidation rules
- Oxygen is always -2 unless its with a group 1A element
- F is always +1
- Hydrogen is -1 in compounds with metals and +1 in all others
