CHEM 1204 Test2 Flashcards
Carbohydrates and Lipids
stereoisomers
molecules with the same structural formula but different 3 dimensional shapes
chiral
an object is chiral if it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image
an example of chiral
hands in a mirror
achiral
an object can be superimposed on its mirror image
enantimers
a chiral object and its mirror image make up a pair of enantiomers; also say that a chiral object and its mirror image are enantiomers of one another
chiral carbon atom
a carbon atom is chiral if it has 4 different things (atoms or groups) attached to it
a sugar that is a polyhydroxyl aldehyde (an aldehyde with an -OH group attached to every carbon with carbonyl group)
aldose
a sugar that is a polyhydroxyl ketone (a ketone with the carbonyl group on the 2nd carbon and the -OH group attached to all other carbons)
ketose
a way f representing a chiral molecule on a flat surface
Fischer projection
How to draw Fischer Projection
the chiral carbon atoms are not explicitly show; a chiral carbon atom occurs/exists at every intersection of 2 lines; carbon atoms that are not explicitly show are drawn vertically
Aldose Fischer
has a carbonyl group on the top carbon
Ketose Fischer
has a carbonyl group on the 2nd carbon from the top
carbohydrate
a polyhydroxy(-OH) aldehyde or ketone or substance that yields polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones upon hydrolysis
-OH represents
a hydroxy group and an alcohol group
monosaccharide
a single sugar molecule
