Chem Flashcards
Definitions! What is Matter?
Matter is anything that takes up space.
Definitions! What is Physical Property?
Physical Property is a property of matter not involving in its manifestation (chemical change)
Definitions! What is Chemical Property?
Chemical Property is a property of a substance relating to its chemical reactivity.
Definitions! What is Density?
Density is the amount of mass in a substance per unit volume.
Definitions! What is Mass?
Mass is the amount of matter or substance that makes up an object.
Definitions! What is Volume?
Volume is the amount of space taken up by a substance.
Different Transformation of States
Melting, Evaporation, Condensation, Solidification, Sublimation & Deposition
Melting = Solid to Liquid Evaporation = Liquid to Gas Condensation = Gas to Liquid Solidification = Liquid to Solid Sublimation = Solid to Gas Deposition = Gas to Solid
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid & Gas
What is KMT?
Kinetic molecular theory states that all matter is composed of a large number of small particles, Atoms, that are in constant motion
Definitions! What is KMT of Matter?
KMT of Matter is the rules that
- All matter is made of very small particles, called atoms or molecules
- There is empty space between particles
- Particles are constantly moving
Comparing states of matter
*Written response
gas are well separated with no regular arrangement. liquid are close together with no regular arrangement. solid are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern.
Difference between Physical & Chemical Change?
*Written response
In physical change the form of the matter changes & in chemical change a new substance forms in a chemical reaction.
What is a neutral atom
*Written response
When an atom has an equal number of electrons and protons, it has an equal number of negative (electrons) and positive electric charges (protons). As a result, the atom’s total electric charge is zero, and it is neutral. Therefore, all the elements in the periodic table are neutral atoms.
