CHE - Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are the physical properties of Alkanes and Alkenes?
Compounds w/ smaller molecules are more volatile (liquids evaporate more easily and it is vapour above liquid that burns), and have lower viscosity (thickness) eg petrol vs oil
Boiling temp increases as more carbons added (Alkane slightly higher for same number of carbons eg propane = -42 deg, propene = -48 deg)
Hydrocarbons are all non-polar
What are the chemical properties of Alkanes?
Combustion reactions (burn in oxygen > release energy > produce CO2 and H2O)
What are the chemical properties of alkenes?
Combustion AND addition reactions
Addition: double > single bonds, each C on either side of double bond gets a part of the molecule added (unusual = w/H2O where H3PO4 needs to be catalyst)
What are polymers?
Large covalent molecular substances made of 10s of thousands of monomer particles (such as ethene) joined in polymerisation
Monomers are typically unsaturated (double bond carbons)
What is unsaturated?
Carbon-based compounds containing double or triple bonds between carbon atoms (isnt saturated with all the H it can have b/c of multiple bond)
