CHD Flashcards
What do the coronary arteries do
They supply the heart tissue and muscle with blood, allowing aerobic respiration to happen in the heart
What happens if you have a lot of saturated fats in your diets
The fatty deposits build up in the artery walls. They narrow the lumen, which is a problem in the coronary arteries and it restricts blood flow to the heart muscles
If the heart receives less blood, what else is it not receiving much of
Oxygen
Without oxygen, what can the heart muscles not do
They can’t perform aerobic respiration, so anaerobic respiration increases
What happens when humans undergo anaerobic respiration
A build-up of lactic acid in the heart muscles, which poison the heart muscles causing heart attacks.
What risk factors increase the risk of CHD
Diet - eating a lot of fatty foods
Smoking - increasing blood pressure and increasing fatty deposits
High blood pressure - damages the artery lining and increases the risk of atherosclerosis
Obesity - increases blood pressure, may be linked to poor diet
Lack of exercise - causes high blood pressure
What’s another word for fatty deposit build up
Atherosclerosis
How can someone diagnose CHD
Risk assessment, a family history check, lifestyle check, blood test, ECG (electrocardiograph), treadmill run, CT or MRI scan, an angiography
