Background
Events gave way to the Chartist movement because there was a downturn in trade which led to the general depression in 1847.

O’Connor was hopeful for a large turnout but it was raining so only 25,000 came, rather than the 200,000 hoped for.

People were dressed in their Sunday Best.
They were restricted from crossing the Thames Bridge to march to Parliament, by police.
O’Connor himself dispersed the meeting and took a handful of supporters to give the petition to Parliament.

The end of Chartism?
NO - the month after, in London, a crowd of 60,000 and in other parts of the country, there was significant chartist activity.
The final Chartist convention… :(
Early 1849 saw the end of the strong allegieance among W.C people and the movement faded.
O’Connor lost his popularity.
1858 - the last Chartist convention was convened and the pressure for reform became the preserve of middle class radicals.
