Bloodshed of Peterloo = reform collasped after 1815.
What happened in 1838?
LWMA, BPU, GNU came together with the intention of creating a national petition drawn up in support of the Six Points of the People’s Charter.

Between 1838-1850, was Chartist support continual or did it fluctuate?
It fluctuated, mainly becoming popular in times of economic hardship and unemployment.
Was Chartism a success or a failure?
It was a failure because of the determination of the Whig and Tory governments trying to resist radical demands, and oppose violence through any means.
When were the MET police founded?
London, 1829.
Similar police forces were created across the country from 1839 onwards.
When did the economy revive - what consequences did this have?
From 1842 - unemployment and distress reduced significantly.
What were the Six Points of the People’s Charter?
Approved by leading Radicals in Birmingham.
- Universal male suffrage
- Secret Ballot
- Constituencies of equal size
- Abolition of property qualifications for MPs
- Annual parliaments
- Payment of MPs.
Why did people turn to radical politics again?
Disillusion with the 1832 Reform Act and the Whig government after 1832, pushed many people towards radical politics
