Born November 1600 - 3rd Child
How was Charles like growing up?
He was a sickly child and not expected to live long and therefore was shunned from public royal life
He needed braces to strengthen legs
Had a stammer and was not a natural leader
Overshadowed by his brother who was popular and charismatic.

What happened to Henry when Charles was young?
He died in 1612 due to typhoid

He was a power hungry individual and he warned Charles about him and that he would threaten his job security.

Charles believed in rituals and ceremonies as an important role.

Very subservient and made them bend on one knee etc.

Not interested in religious balance and wanted to strengthen the Church of England

Wanted to stabilize the crown and finances in general

He disliked the fact that his father was very extravagant and was a war-orientated individual
Did Charles believe in absolutism?
Yes he did, he believed in absolute power and wanted Parliament to be a “rubber stamp” where they agree to everything regardless
Refused to compromise and saw himself as a judge.
What did Charles believe his subjects are in terms of the King?
A King should judge over his subjects - different to James who respected his advisors.
