Q

Castile - Weaknesse

A

Alcabala made into a fixed sum - 1534 // value fell bc inflation

Nobility: Juros only way of getting money from them
–> Paid back by assigning ordinary revenue income with interest BUT // less income came to Charles

–> Sales certificates of nobility earned quick money but this further decreased the size of the tax paying population

Tried to get the Sisa tax (food) in Cortes of Toledo 1538 BUT nobility refused

Q

Expendature

A

Crowns position worsened in early years of reign bc
- Burgundian greed + expense of Imperial election
2x Cost of the Burgundian Court

Ordere of the Golden Fleece = salaries had to be paid for this

–> Lead to the Comuneros Revolt partially, raised money for election + spent money out of Castile, series of Cortes

Warfare = Metz Campaign of 1552 = 2 million Ducats
