Charged Objects Flashcards
1
Q
What happens if you walk on nylon carpets?
A
- A transfer of electrons takes place as they go from the carpet to you
- The charge will then build up on your body
2
Q
Describe what happens when you then touch a metal door handle after this transfer of electrons
A
- The charge flows to the conductor which we get a little shock from
3
Q
Describe what happens to the electrons when a balloon is rubbed against you
A
- Electrons are transferred to the ballon, leaving it with a negative charge
4
Q
How does a balloon stick to a wall?
A
- From the balloon being left with the negative charge, so it will stick as the charges on the surface of the wall can move a little
5
Q
Describe what happens to the negative charge of the balloon when the balloon sticks to the wall
A
- The negative charges of the balloon can repel the negative charges on the surface of the wall
6
Q
Describe how the balloon is left on the wall
A
- A positive charge is left on the surface of the wall which attracts the negatively charged balloon
- This attraction holds the balloon on the wall
