Charge, current, potential differnce and resistance Flashcards
What are the 2 types of current?
direct and alternating
What is direct current?
a current that flows consistently in one direction- flow of electrons is in one direction all around the circuit
What is alternating current?
a current in which the direction of the flow of electrons continually reverses
What is current?
the flow of electricity in an electronic circuit, the amount of electricity flowing through a circuit
electrical current is the rate of flow of electric charge
What is charge?
the quantity of electricity in a circuit
What’s the equation for current?
charge = current x time
Q x I x T
What is current measured in?
amps
What is time measured in?
seconds
What is resistance measured in?
ohms
What does the current through a component depend on?
the resistance or the component and the potential differnece across the component
How do we measure potential differnece?
a voltmeter is placed in parallel with that component in order to measure the differnce in energy from one side of the component to the other
What is potential difference also known as?
voltage (v)
What is potential differnce a measure of?
a measure of energy per unit of charge transferred between 2 points in a circuit
What’s the formula for potential differnce?
potential differnece = energy / charge
What’s the formula for potential differnce in resistance?
potential differnce = current x resistance
