How did Israel recieve his name?
Jacob was travelling back to his home when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the night. They wrestled all night until the angel touched Jacob’s hip and dislocated it. Jacob still wouldn’t give up until he received a blessing, so he was renamed Israel, meaning “he strives with God”
The major events of Joseph’s life
- grew up youngest and favourite of brothers
- dreamt about brother but foolishly shared with them and angered them
- sold as slave to Egypt
- worked his way to head of Potiphar’s household, Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him but failed
- accused of trying to seduce her and imprisoned
- became head of jail cell until Pharoah heard of his reputation for being able to interpret dreams
- interpreted Pharoah’s dreams and became second in command
- reunited with brothers and family moved to Egypt with him
The major events of Samuel’s life
- his mother Hannah was barren and prayed for a child
- Samuel was born and dedicated to the temple
- Samuel heard God and was called to ministry as Israel’s last judge
- because of his wicked sons, Israel demanded a king and Saul was annointed
- Saul was wicked, so David was secretly annointed
- died of old age
The major events of Solomon’s life
- born to David and Bathsheba and anointed king
- the Lord appeared to Solomon and Solomon requests wisdom, which God granted
- Solomon became known for his wisdom and wealth
- Solomon built the temple and own palace (7yrs/temple, 13yrs/palace)
- God promised Solomon that if he and his line remained righteous, they would always have an heir on the throne
- Solomon’s foreign wives turned him from the Lord
- Solomon died and his kingdom split under his son Rehoboam
