What needs to be in the introduction of a characterization
The Introduction should include:
- Information on the book; title, author
- Name of the character (role of the character in the play)
- Short description of the character
- Connecting sentence
Example:
The short story “Civil Peace”, written by Chinua Achebe, focuses on the time shortly after the Nigerian Biafra war, by giving insight on Jonathan Iwegbu’s live, a husband and father of four now three children.
Tipp: Instead of using “is about” write “focuses”
What needs to be included in the main part of a characterization
The main part is a detailed characterisation of the character from the outer to the inner; it should include:
(in the beginning you can also mention if the author gives a rather direct or indirect picture of the character)
- Physical description (if not mentioned say so!)
- Language, nationality, general impression
- Social background, family, kind of friends, profession
- Action and dialog of the person
- Behaviour towards others
- Inner thoughts, emotions, dreams, attitude
- Impression on others
- For a nice transition hint at the personal development
- Transition sentence
What should be in the conclusion of a characterization?
The conclusion should summarise nicely your findings about her personality be cautious do not repeat yourself! here for you should conclude if the subject is an either flat or round character.
Example:
In conclusion one could say that Jonathan because of his character traits and personality will have a greater chance at surviving hard and hopeless times, focusing on the good. Throughout the short story Jonathan develops as a consequence of tragic events, which makes him a round character.
