Characteristics of Living Organisms Flashcards
Understand the characteristics shared by living organisms
What is the abbreviation used to remember these Characteristics
M - Movement
R - Respiration
S - Sensitivity (respond to stimuli)
G - Growth
R - Reproduction
E - Excretion
N - Nutrition
C - Control
Movement:
Move by the action of muscles in animals, and slow growth movements in plants
E.g. To food and water, away from predators
Even plants move a bit
Respiration:
Release energy from their food
Growth:
Increase in size, using materials from their food to grow and develop
Sensitivity:
React to changes in their surroundings
Excretion:
Waste products have to be removed.
E.g. Carbon Dioxide and Urine
Reproduction:
Organisms have to produce offspring in order for their species to survive
Nutrition:
Need nutrients to provide them with energy and the raw materials for Growth and Repair.
E.g. Fats Proteins
Control:
They can control their internal condition
E.g. Temperature and Water Content
