Characteristics and types of epithelial tissue Flashcards
LO 1 Describe the characteristics and types of epithelial tissue
Name the two types of EPITHELIAL tissue
Covering and lining
Glandular
Name the four functions of epithelial tissue
- Protection
- Absorption
- Filtration and excretion
- Secretion
What is APICAL-BASAL POLARITY?
A distinct difference in structure between the ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ of cells.
APICAL - top
BASAL- bottom (next to BASEMENT MEMBRANE)
What is a TIGHT JUNCTION?
A specialist junction between cells that prevent the passage of proteins
What is a DESMOSOME?
Join cells together but can unzip
What is a GAP JUNCTION?
A specialist junction that can open and close to allow ions and solutes to pass directly cell to cell
What is the BASEMENT MEMBRANE?
An additional BARRIER that is attached to epithelial cells by HEMI-DESMOSOMES
Name the layers of the BASEMENT MEMBRANE?
- BASAL LAMINA
2. LAMINA RETICULARIS
Name three characteristics of EPITHELIAL TISSUE
- Avascular
- Innervated
- High regenerative capability
What does SIMPLE EPITHELIA mean?
Single cell layer
What does STRATIFIED EPITHELIA mean?
Multiple cell layers stacked
