Characteristics and Classification of Organisms Flashcards
(32 cards)
How many different kingdoms can organisms be divided in? And which are they?
5- Prokaryotes, Protists, Plants, Animals, and Fungi
Which kingdoms reproduce sexually?
Protists, Plants, Animals, and Fungi
Which kingdoms reproduce asexually?
Prokaryotes and some Protists
Which kingdoms are non motile? (cant move)
Prokaryotes, Plants, and Fungi
How do Prokaryotes get nutrients?
Photosynthesize
How do Protists get nutrients?
Absorb, Ingest, or Photosynthesize
How do Plants get nutrients?
Photosynthesize
How do Animals get nutrients?
Ingest
How do Fungi get nutrients?
Absorb
Which kingdoms are multicellular?
Protists, Plants, Animals, and Fungi.
Which kingdoms are eukaryotic?
(an organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus)
Protists, Plants, Animals, and Fungi
Which kingdoms are prokaryotic?
(Prokaryotes also differ from eukaryotes in that they contain only a single loop of stable chromosomal DNA stored in an area named the nucleoid, while eukaryote DNA is found on tightly bound and organised chromosomes.)
Prokaryotes
Which Kingdoms are motile?
(can move)
Prokaryotes, Animals, and Protists
How many characteristics does life have and what are they called?
Nutrition, Respiration, Movement, Growth, Excretion, Sensitivity, and Reproduction
Nutrition
Organisms need to obtain food as source of energy (photosynthesis and ingestion)
Respiration
Chemical reactions that breakdown nutrients and release energy
Movement
Organisms move themselves or parts of the body into new areas or positions
Growth
They increase in size and dry mass by increasing cell number and cell size
Excretion
Removal of waste, toxic, or substance in excess
Sensitivity
Ability to detect and respond to interior or exterior stimuli
Reproduction
Ability to replicate and make new individuals
What groups are organisms organized into?
Kingdom, Phyllum, Class, Order, Genus, and Species
A species is a group of individuals that live in the same habitat and breed together producing fertile offspring
What are Invertebrates?
Invertebrates are a group of animals that do not have vertebral column. Such as, Nematodes, Annelids, Molluscs, and Arthopods.
