What is the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia?
Two (or more) characteristic symptoms being present for a significant portion of time within a 1-month period
Social/occupational dysfunction for a period of time following the onset of the disturbance, where major areas of functioning are markedly below the level achieved previously
What is disorganised thinking/speech?
Positive symptom where a person’s speech or thinking may become disorganised
What are hallucinations?
Positive symptom where a person has perceptions that are not real
What is catatonic behaviour?
Positive symptom where a person displays varied bodily movement
What are delusions?
Positive symptom consisting of beliefs that are not real, usually experienced with no supporting evidence
What is disorganised behaviour?
Positive symptom where the person suffering may become disorganised and unpredictable
What is avolition?
Negative symptom consisting of a loss of interest and motivation in life and activities
What is anhedonia?
Negative symptom consisting of an inability to feel pleasure
What is alogia?
Negative symptom consisting of a decrease in the amount of speech produced
What is flatness of affect?
Negative symptom consisting of the appearance of having diminished emotional expression
