Won’t see people in the precontemplation stage. People in this stage have no intention of changing. They do not exercise and do not intend to start in the next 6 months.
Best approach is to educate.
Contemplation
People in this stage do not exercise but are thinking about becoming more active in the next 6 months.
Best approach for trainers is to educate.
Preparation
People in this stage occasionally exercise but are planning to begin exercising regularly in the next month. Believers in health benefits of exercise. May have unrealistic expectations.
Best approach:
Help identify realistic goals
Help maintain their beliefs of importance of exercise
Discuss programs that work best for different clients
Schedule, preferences, avoid injury exercises
Discuss building social support network
Action
People in the action phase are active. They have started to exercise, but have not yet maintained for 6 months. Continue to educate, discuss barriers to exercise and to anticipate upcoming disruptions. Prepare for barriers or disruptions.
Maintenance
People in the maintenance stage have maintained change for 6 months or more. Even though they have formed change in behavior in their exercise routine, they’re still tempted to return to old habits of less exercise.
