· Mt Zion the only place of refuge
Big picture of 13-27
YHWH will judge all the world for its sin in an act of desolating uncreation.
But the nations will be restored to YHWH worship after judgment; and even within the turmoil of judgment, Zion remains the one place of security.
YHWH’s destruction and restoration of all things is elevated to an absolute, cosmic dimension, both for God’s people and the nations, as the old order of things dies, YHWH is enthroned in theophanic splendour, and all nations come in worship.
Ch 14 Key verses (2)
12-15: How you have fallen from heaven, Morning Star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.”
25-26: “I will crush the Assyrian in my land; on my mountains I will trample him down. His yoke will be taken from my people, and his burden removed from their shoulders. This is the plan determined for the whole world; this is the hand stretched out over all nations.” –> link to ch 5, 9 –> connecting this act of judgment with chs 1-12.
Ch 19 Key verses (2)
12: “Where are your wise men now? Let them show you and make known what the LORD Almighty has planned against Egypt.” –> anticipating same q in chs 40-48
22: “The LORD will strike Egypt with a plague, he will strike them and heal them. They will turn to the LORD, and he will respond to their pleas and heal them.” –> sounds like how YHWH turns Israel back to himself in chs. 1-12
Ch 24 Key verses (2)
18b: “The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.” –> flood-like reduction of the world to chaos – foundations of reality undone. “The floodgates (or: windows) of heavens” recalls Gen 7.11, 8.2
23b: “The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem and before its elders – with great glory.” → theophanic appearance of the divine king. Glory before elders on the mountain recalls Mt Sinai in Ex 24, and suggests a renewal of covenant with Israel.
Chapter 26 Key verse
12-14a: “LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. LORD our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but your name alone do we honour. They are now dead, they live no more; their spirits do not rise.”
