Chapters 1 and 2- Human Biological science and Scientific Inquiry Flashcards
How do scientists investigate?
literature review, observation, classifying and experimentation
How do scientists avoid bias and error?
objectivity- should not allow their own thoughts and feelings to influence an experiment
Define validity?
an experiment is valid if it had tested what it is supposed to test
What are hypotheses?

What are the variables?
any factor that may change during an experiment
What is an independent variable?
the factor that is being investigated
What is the dependent variable?
the factor that changes in response to the changes being made to the independent variable
What are the controlled variables?
factors that are kept the same
What are the uncontrolled variables?
factors that are not kept the same
What is experimental error?
results of experiments that contain errors
What is systematic error?
caused by the experimental design
What is human error?
simply a mistake made by the experimenter
What is random error?
unpredictable error that occurs
What are ethics?
set of moral principles or values
What is ethical behaviour?
behaviour that conforms to principles or values
