Chapter5-Classification Flashcards
Archaea
Domain consisting of unicellular prokaryotes that have cell walls that don’t contain peptidoglycan; corresponds to the kingdom Archaeabacteria
Animalia
A kingdom made up of complex multicellular organisms that lack cell walls, can usually move around and quickly respond to their environment
Species
A group of similar of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
Archaebacteria
Kingdom of unicellular (no nucleus) prokaryotes; others whose cell walls are made up of peptidoglycan
Ex: HALOFERAX
Bacteria, live in harsh conditions (very salty, no O2, very hot), ancient form of life
(Remember: harsh=Arch
Bacteria
Domain of unicellular prokaryotes that have cell walls containing peptidoglycan; corresponds to the kingdom Eubacteria
Binomial Nomenclature
Classification system in which each species is assigned a two-part scientific name, uses Latin, developed by Calos Linnaeus)
Example: Homo sapiens- humans
Panthera tigris-tiger
Class
A group of (closely related)similar orders
Domain
The most inclusive category
3 largest taxonomic categories larger than a kingdom ( Eubacteria, Eukarya, and Archaea
Eubacteria
Kingdom of unicellular prokaryotes whose cell walls are made up of peptidoglycan
Ex: ESCHERICHIA COLI
Advanced bacteria, live all around us, many are germs
Eukarya
Domain consisting of all organisms that have a nucleus; includes : protists, fungi, plants, and animals
Family
A group of closely related genera
Ex: Family Felidae(cats)
Family Canidae(dogs)
